Illas Cíes National Park is an archipelago off the coast of Galicia, Spain, renowned for its pristine beaches, rich marine biodiversity, and rugged hiking trails offering stunning Atlantic Ocean views.
Illas Cíes National Park is located in the northwest of Spain, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Galicia near the city of Vigo. The park comprises three main islands—Monteagudo, Do Faro, and San Martiño—characterized by dramatic granite cliffs, turquoise waters, and extensive sandy beaches. Its unique position at the mouth of the Ría de Vigo estuary creates a diverse marine ecosystem, part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park which includes other adjacent archipelagos. The islands are home to a wide variety of bird species, including large populations of seabirds such as the European shag and yellow-legged gull, as well as Mediterranean monk seals which are occasionally sighted in the surrounding waters. On land, heathlands, eucalyptus plantations, and pine forests cover the terrain, adding ecological diversity. Historically, the islands have served as fishing outposts and have some ancient defensive remains, including the notable lighthouse on Do Faro island. Outdoor recreation is a primary draw, with hiking trails leading to panoramic viewpoints, secluded coves and beaches such as Rodas Beach, often voted among the best in the world. Visitors can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and bird watching. Due to their protected status and fragile environment, visitor numbers are managed with permits and regulated ferry access, ensuring minimal ecological impact. The park offers limited camping opportunities, accessible only by permit, emphasizing conservation alongside sustainable enjoyment of this Atlantic paradise.
